I’ve been fortunate to attend every North East Anti-Racism Coalition gathering since the very beginning. Each one has been different, but what has stayed the same is the energy in the room; the sense of purpose, comradeship, and determination to keep pushing for change in our region.

Our events aren’t just about listening to speakers or ticking an agenda, they are spaces where individuals and organisations come together as equals – sharing experiences, listening to one another, and building connections that last beyond the day itself. The conversations are honest, often challenging, but always constructive. You walk away not just with ideas, but with new allies, new networks, and the reassurance that you are not alone in this work.

For me, the most powerful part of each gathering has been the people. People from different sectors, backgrounds, and communities – united by a shared vision of a North East where racism and hatred have no place. It’s in the side conversations over tea, the exchange of contacts, and the offers of “let’s do this together” that you really see the Coalition’s strength.

This is why attending matters. Because movements are built not only on principles, but on relationships. Every time we meet, we are strengthening the ties that help us stand stronger against hate, and creating the space to imagine what a more inclusive, anti-racist region can look like.

And importantly, these spaces are open to everyone. Even if you don’t agree with us, we want you to come and join the conversation. Dialogue matters, and we believe that as long as it is respectful and non-violent, hearing different perspectives helps us all grow.

If you haven’t been to one of our gatherings yet, I encourage you to come along. Our next event is on 15th October 2025 at Newcastle Building Society, Cobalt Business Park Newcastle upon Tyne NE28 9AJ. To find out more and register, click here

We’d love to see as many members, friends, and new faces as possible too. Your presence makes a difference to you, to the Coalition, and to the future we are building together.

In the meantime, stay connected with us on Facebook, X, and LinkedIn to keep up with updates, reflections, and ways to get involved.
